Know The University By now there are about 245 Universities and National Institutions, deemed as Universities, in India. Jadavpur is one of them yet it is different in its history, tradition and culture. Jadavpur became a statutory University only on December 24, 1955. But the story began much earlier, under very different and unique circumstances. Bengal, the birthplace of the national liberation movement, was planned to be partitioned in 1905 by the British rulers. Bengal revolted and there was an unprecedented popular upsurge in the form of the "Swadeshi Movement ". In the wake of this movement, which had grown to national poportions, came into being the National Council of Education, Bengal in 1906, "to impart education literary and scientific as well as technical and professional on national lines and exclusively under national control". Hence, Jadavpur University is one of the earliest trademarks of constructive swadeshi. It is primarily a Unitary University having only four affiliated colleges, viz., Smt. Jawahari Debi Birla Institute of Home Science and Jadavpur Vidyapith College of Education, Institute of Business Management under the National Council of Education, Bengal and Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Calcutta. Due to the tradition and achievements, this University has been recognised as one of the leading Universities of India. National Council of Education(N.C.E.), Bengal is still alive. Here on the campus it runs Primary Schools and a Higher Secondary School called Jadavpur Vidyapith and a College with Degree and Postgraduate courses in Education. N.C. E. has also introduced the much sought – after MBA courses in the evening. N.C.E. as the parent body looks after the welfare of Jadavpur University. We all feel, even in this changed socio-political set up, that the Council has much to do towards cultural and moral regeneration of the country. The Council has, of late, taken up an ambitious project of ‘Jatiya Abhidhan’ on the pattern of the original Oxford Dictionary. It also runs a ‘Centre of PlaceNames’ doing interesting research work on West Bengal’s villages maintains an Archive and a Publication Centre. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The University has a strength of about 8738 students. (Male - 5832, Female - 2906) excluding those of affiliated colleges, nearly half of which belongs to the Engineering Faculty. Girl students constitute about 70% of the student population of Arts Faculty and about 25% of the total strength. We have about 50 foreign students covering 8 countries of Asia and Africa. Number of full – time Research Scholars /Fellows Sponsored by the UGC/State Government /CSIR/ DSTetc. will amount to about 418. Jadavpur University has above 722 full time teachers, 364 in Engineering, 174 in Arts and 184 in Science. The number of non-teaching staff, including officers, will be in the region of 1480. Lady teachers constitute about 10%of the Faculty. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Students joining courses from any other University are required to produce a migration certificate from that University for pursuing studies here. The certificate is not insisted upon while granting admission here, but the admission is provisional. A student shall have to produce a MIGRATION CERTIFICATE within four months from the date of admission. It is a must before they are registered as full student here and permitted to appear in the first semester/annual examination. One can be debarred from appearing in any University Examination here unless his/her name is registered at this university on the production of a migration certificate. Remember that getting a migrating certificate is a time consuming affair and you must apply to the University concerned through the College where you have studied last. A candidate who has passed his/her last examination from a University other than Jadavpur University shall have to produce a migration certificate and pay the requisite Registration fee to the Jadavpur University within four months from the date of admission failing which his/her admission to any course under Jadavpur Universities is liable to be cancelled. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our intention is always to keep an up-to-date dossier on the student. So, whenever, there is a change in address or any important development in the student’s career, the student should please keep us informed. Please write to the Registrar and deposit it with the Muster Roll Section, where records are maintained.
