Library Profile

Jadavpur University Library was started along with the establishment of the University in 1955 in order to cater to the academic and research needs of the faculty, research scholars, students, officers and non-teaching staff. Since then, the University Library has gone from strength to strength to live-up to the expectations of its immediate clientele. It is one of the best equipped libraries in the country.


The Library

The University is proud of its libraries which amount to 30 in number. Apart from the large Central Library (approx.total area of 36000 sq.ft.) and the one at its Salt Lake Campus, the University has 28 departmental libraries under the Faculty of Arts, Science, Engineering and Technology. There are libraries attached with the Schools/Centres for studies. The Central Library of Jadavpur University is one of the central facilities used by all types of members and ex-members of this university. This is the third largest library in West Bengal.

Library Hours

The Library Hours of the Central Library are as follows:

Monday to Friday :     10:20 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Saturday              :     10:20 a.m. to 4:40 p.m.


The Central Library remains closed on Sunday and other university holidays.


Members

The membership of the University Library is open to the teachers, students, research scholars, officers, non-teaching employees, retired employees, ex-students of the university ; and the reading facilities are provided to outside scholars engaged in serious reading and research.

Borrowing Privileges of the Users


All categories of members except the short-term users (on special permission) are entitled to borrow books from the Central as well as the Departmental Library.

The work of registration of library members is being done in the Central Library but the members registered in the Central Library can also use the Salt Lake Campus Library and the Departmental Library.

All categories of members are to pay over-due charges for late return of the books.
