University Grants Commission had decided to open new Academic Staff Colleges with reasonable financial assistance in five Universities/Institutions, including Jadavpur University, with effect from February 2000. As a result the Academic Staff College of Jadavpur University was established in its new building in Salt Lake Campus, Kolkata. Main Objectives of so founded Academic Staff College are to conduct specially designed Academic Staff Orientation programmes for the newly appointed lectures and Refresher Courses for serving teachers to keep abreast of the latest advances in various subjects, exchange expressions with their peers and learn mutually from each others . Since the establishment of the UGC-ASC coincided with the rise of Jadavpur University to such an exalted position in the Indian academic establishment, it is felt that it has an added responsibility to contribute in its own ways to the vibrancy of the intellectual environment and community life both within the campus, and outside. 

Since its inception in 2000, the UGC-ASC, Jadavpur University, has organised eleven (11) Orientation Programmes for college and university teachers, one Orientation Programme for Academic Administrators, and eighty two (82) Refresher Courses in a host of subjects. The content of the orientation courses has been redesigned in keeping with the recent UGC directive to equip college and university teachers in the tools of information technology.
