People
of Kolkata witnessed a new blend of entertainment with information
on April 14th, 2008. Jadavpur University has launched its
own Community Radio Station, RadioJU. It’s the first of its kind in
Eastern India. This Community Radio Station is being set up as part
of the ongoing JU Project TEQIP in collaboration with School of
Media Communication and Culture, JU to promote community
interactions and dissemination of all kinds of knowledge.
The community radio provides a new platform for students, teachers
and local people to showcase their creativity. Programmes broadcast
by the radio are heard within a radius of 10 km from the University.
The Radio Station not only addresses the needs of the campus
population but also those who are outside the university and are
part of the community. The main objectives of RadioJU are
empowerment, information and entertainment.
RadioJU is a radio station with a difference. It entertains and
enlightens its listeners. It has a wide variety of programmes to
offer. On one end of the spectrum, are programmes like ‘Alochana’
which brings together experts from various fields to offer views on
various topics, especially contemporary issues, such as the
political condition of Nepal. On the other end of the spectrum we
have entertainment programmes like ‘Besurer Asar’ where, as a spoof
on all the reality shows, the most atonal voice will be identified
and applauded.
RadioJU is instrumental in the revival of ‘Shruti natak’ or radio
drama which go on air once a week. Children’s Programming--which is
conspicuous by its absence in commercial radio--finds pride of place
in 90.8 MHz, seven days a week. Schools situated within the radius
are grateful to RadioJU for providing a platform for its students to
perform on air.
We also have career counselling programmes and programmes for people
with special needs. We also air programmes for special days; for
example, May 8 was devoted to Rabindranath Tagore to mark his
birthday. We also have programmes based on Campus happenings.
‘Sanskriti’ the cultural programme includes music for all tastes,
ranging from Indian Classical to Western Classical, Band numbers,
Instrumental music. Most of the programmes are in Bengali since the
majority of listeners are more comfortable in Bengali.
At present we air programmes for 8 hrs daily starting from 12.00
noon.
