Courses of Study under the Faculty of Science
Undergraduate Courses
Bachelor
of Science (Honours):
Courses of three years' duration in Chemistry, Geological Science,
Mathematics and Physics. The University does not offer any undergraduate
Pass course.
Students will have to offer two subsidiary subjects besides their
Honours subject, as follows:

The decision
of the Admissions Committee will be final regarding the allotment
of subsidiary subjects.
Eligibility: At least 60% aggregate in the Higher Secondary
Examination of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education
or any other recognized equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry
and Mathematics. The required aggregate is 45% for SC/ST and Permanently
Disabled candidates, and applicants in the Sports Category.
Selection Procedure: Admission will be made strictly according
to the marks obtained in the Madhyamik or equivalent (+10) level
and Higher Secondary (Science) or equivalent level (10+2) examinations.
For each subject, a separate merit list will be prepared on the
basis of which candidates will be called for interview. This merit
list will be prepared out of 800 marks as follows:
Marks at Madhyamik level: Mathematics 100, Physical Science 100
Marks at Higher Secondary level: Mathematics 200, Physics 200, Chemistry
200.
Where the total marks awarded in a subject is 100 in H. S.
level the marks will be converted to a base of 200.
There will be no admission test.
iv) The list of candidates to be interviewed will be displayed at
the end of the third week after publication of the Higher Secondary
results of the WBCHSE. Interview and admission may be arranged at
the end of the fourth week. The list of candidates, schedule of
interviews and other details will be displayed on the University
notice board. No separate intimation will be sent to any I candidate.
For admission in the SC/ST Reserved Category
SC/ST candidates who have obtained at least 45% marks in the H.S.
or equivalent examination are eligible to apply. SC/ST certificates
must be obtained from a competent authority in the name of the candidates
themselves. Attested photocopies must be furnished along with the
application form. Admission will be governed by G.O. no. 837- TW/
Ec dt.12.9.96.
For admission in the Permanently Disabled Reserved Category
Permanently Disabled candidates who have obtained at least 45% marks
in the H.S. or equivalent examination are eligible to apply. A Permanent
Disability Certificate must be obtained from a competent authority,
viz. Civil Surgeon, District Chief Medical Officer or Superintendent
of a Government Hospital. An attested photocopy of the certificate
must be furnished along with the application.
For admission in the Sports Category :
At least 45% marks in H.S. or equivalent (subject to academic eligibility)
is required for admission in the Sports Category. The candidates
must have a record of participation in the current year or at least
one of the two preceding years in International, National, Inter-College,
Inter-District, Inter- School or First Division League/Knock-Out
tournaments. Such eligible candidates will have to
appear at the Sports Trial on the dates, time and Venue to be put
up on the notice board of the University. No separate call letters
for trial will be issued to the candidates.
Participants in tournaments/events organized or certified by bodies
other than those mentioned above will not be entertained. Certificates
from clubs are not admissible. Although selection under the Sports
Category for any game/event will be made in order of merit on the
basis of the score in the Trial, seats under the category for the
subject of study will be offered in order of merit on the basis
of the academic score of such candidates for all games/events taken
together.
Other Rules and Information for the Bachelor of Science course:
I. A student who has already obtained a Bachelor's degree from an
Indian Bachelor's degree course in Science at this University.
2. If a candidate does not appear for the interview at the specified
date and time, his/her application will be treated as cancelled
without further reference to him/her.
3. Candidates who appeared for the interview but could not be accommodated
within the specified intake in each subject and category will be
placed on the waiting list. Waitllsted candidates will be called
for admission in order of merit
against vacancies, if any, within 30 days from the date of commencement
of classes.
4. Classes will commence immediately after admission. Students must
record at least 60% attendance (in Honours and each subsidiary subject
separately) at the end of 30 (thirty) working days from the date
of commencement of
classes or date of admission of the candidate, whichever is later,
failing which his/her admission will be treated as cancelled after
30 (thirty) working days without further reference to him/her.
5. All courses are non-residential. Hostel seats are not guaranteed.
6. Candidates are required to bring all their original admit cards
and marksheets at the time of interview , and at the time of admission.
The following items should also be produced at the time of admission:
(1) 3 copies of a recent passport-size photograph
(2) fee book(available from the University Information Counter)
(3) discontinuity certificate where applicable
(4) SC/ST or PO certificate where applicable
