Master
of Arts (Evening Course)
Courses of three years duration leading to the Master of Arts degree
in Bengali, Economics, English, History, Philosophy or Sanskrit.
The evening courses are primarily intended for those in actual employment
in schools. Others may be admitted if seats are available.
Conditions of Eligibility
For Bengali and English:
For teachers serving in Secondary/Higher Secondary Institutions
recognized by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or West
Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent Boards/Councils:
At least 3 year B.A. Pass degree with the subject to be studied
as one of the subjects carrying a minimum of 300 marks.
For all others: Honours degree in the subject or in Comparative
Literature.
For History and Philosophy:
For teachers serving in Secondary/Higher Secondary Institutions
recognized by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or West
Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent Boards/Councils:
At least 3 year B.A. Pass degree with the subject to be studied
as one of the subjects carrying a minimum of 300 marks.
For all others: Honours degree in the sobject

For Economics:
For teachers serving in Secondary/Higher Secondary Institutions
recognized by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education./ West
Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent Boards/Councils:
At least 3 year B.A. / B.Sc. Pass degree with Economics as one of
the subjects carrying minimum 300 marks and Mathematics as another
subject.
For all others: Honours degree in Economics with Mathematics
or Statistics as a subsidiary subject.
For Sanskrit:
a)Honours degree in Sanskrit; or 3-year B.A. Pass degree with Sanskrit
as one of the subjects carrying minimum 300 marks; or the Shastri
qualification of the Oriental Course
Or
b) Honours Degree in Bengali/Comparative Literature/Philosophy with
Sanskrit as a subject at the B.A. or Higher Secondary level
Or
c) at least 2-year B.A. Pass degree plus Pass in Tirtha or in the
Sanskrit Bridge Course.
N.B.: For all subjects, candidates who have passed the Correspondence
Course, Distance Education Course etc of a recognized university
will have to pass a qualifying test to be considered for admission.
Selection Procedure:
For Bengali:
Selection will be on the basis of a written test. Preference
will be given to teachers and librarian candidates.
For Economics, English, History and Philosophy:
1. Teacher candidates with Honours in the subject (or Comparative
Literature in the case of English) and serving in Secondary / Higher
Secondary Institutions recognized by the WBBSE/WBCHSE or equivalent
Board/Council, as well as librarian candidates, will be given first
priority. They will be admitted on the basis of their Honours marks
in the relevant subject. Applicants for a~mission to the English
(Evening) course with B.A. in Comparative Literature will be required
to sit for a written admission test, and admitted on the basis of
equal weightage to marks secured in (a) their Honours papers and
(b) the written test.
2. If vacancies exist after admitting all eligible candidates under
category 1 above, eligible teacher/librarian candidates with 3-year
Pass Degree will be admitted next, in order of merit, on the basis
of the marks secured in the relevant subject in the Pass degree
examination.
3. If vacancies exist after admitting all eligible candidates under
categories 1 and 2 above, other eligible candidates with Honours
degrees who are not in employment will be admitted, in order of
merit, on the basis of their Honours marks in the relevant subject.
Applicants for admission to the English (Evening) course with B.A.
in Comparative Literature will be required to sit for a written
admission test, and admitted on the basis of equal weightage to
marks in the B.A. Honours papers and written test, as for category
1 above.
For Sanskrit:
Candidates will be admitted in order of merit on the basis of the
marks obtained in Sanskrit at the undergraduate level.
Other Information for admission to the Master of Arts (Evening
Course):
1. After two consecutive years of admission, every third year will
be a 'gap year' when no admissions will be conducted.
2. If the number of suitable candidates for admission is less than
15 in a particular course (10 in the case of Sanskrit), the course
will not be conducted in that particular year.
3. Admissions under reserved categories as for the M.A. Day Courses.
4. Where applicabJe, a No-objection Certificate must be submitted
from the present employer (by an authorized official competent
to issue such certificates) mentioning the candidate's present designation,
date of appointment, present salary and scale of pay.
5. Candidates are required to bring the following at the time of
admission:
a) 5 copies of a recent passport size photograph
b) all original mark sheets and certificates
c) the admit card or certificate of Madhyamik or equivalent examination
(for age verification)
d) a fee book obtainable from the University Information Office
e) discontinuity certificate, where applicable.
f) character certificate from the head of the institution last attended
6. At the time of interview, candidates are to produce the original
marksheets of all examinations passed, the admit card of the school-leaving
examination (for age verification).
7. Lists of provisionally selected and waitlisted candidates, as
well as instructions for the admission process, will be posted on
the notice board. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates.
