Master
of Arts (Day Course)
Two-year day courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts in
Bengali, Comparative Literature, Economics, English, Film Studies,
History, International Relations, Philosophy or Sanskrit.
Conditions
of Eligibility and Selection Procedure:
For graduates of the relevant department
of Jadavpur University:
Direct admission will be granted on obtaining Honours degree in
the respective subjects.
For graduates of other departments and universities:
For Bengali
3-year B.A. Honours degree or its equivalent in the subject or in
Comparative Literature from a recognized University with at least
50% marks (45% for PD category). Selection will be made on the basis
of a written test.
For History and Philosophy
3-year B.A. Honours degree or its equivalent in the subject from
a recognized University with at least 50% marks (45% for PD category).
Selection will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the Honours
papers.
For Comparative Literature
3-year Honours degree or its equivalent in any literature or non-literature
subject (Arts, Commerce or Science); or degree in Engineering, Technology
or Medical Science; or other recognized Bachelor's degree. Selection
will be made by the following procedure:
Category I (graduates in Comparative Literature): on the
basis of marks secured in B.A. Honours papers.
:
Category II (graduates in a single-literature Honours subject):
on the basis of equal weightage to marks secured in (a) the Honours
subject and (b) a written test.
Category III (Honours graduates in non-literature subjects, degree-holders
in Engineering, Technology and Medical Science, and other recognized
Bachelor's degree-holders): on the basis of an Honours-level
examination of 2 papers in general literature. In addition Commerce,
Science, Engineering, Technology and Medical graduates, and other
recognized Bachelor's degree-holders, will have to sit for one paper
in English and one paper in Bengali/Alternative English (for those
who did not have Bengali at the H. S. level), and obtain a minimum
of 36% marks in each..
For English
3-years B.A. Honours degree in English or in Comparative Literature
with at least 50% marks in the Honours subject. Selection will be
made on the basis of equal weightage given to marks secured in (a)
the Honours papers and (b) a written test
For Film Studies
3-year Honours degree or its equivalent in any subject (Arts, Commerce
or Science); or a degree in Engineering, Technology or Medical Science;
or other recognized Bachelor's degree.
Selection will be made by the following procedure:
Category I (Honours graduates in Film Studies) : On the basis
of marks secured in the Honours papers.
Category II (Honours graduates in other Arts subjects, including
Economics, and in Commerce) : On the basis of equal weightage
given to marks secured in (a) the Honours papers and (b) a prerequisite
Honours-level examination, subject to their securing at least 36%
marks in English and Bengali/Alternative English (the last strictly
for those who did not have Bengali at the H.S. level).
Category III (Honours graduates in Science subjects; degree-holders
in Engineering, Technology and Medical Science; or other recognized
Bachelor's degrees)
and
Category IV (Graduates with a 3-year B.A. degree with Film StudiesNideography/Mass
Communications etc. as a subject of study; or a 2-year B.A. degree
with Film Studies /Videography /Mass Communications etc. as a subject,
followed by a one-year Bridge course or one-subject B.A.):
On the basis of marks secured in a prerequisite Honours-level examination
in Film Studies, subject to their securing at least 36% marks in
English and Bengali/ Alternative English (the last strictly for
those who did not 1 1have Bengali at the H.S. level).
For International Relations:
3-year B.A. Honours degree in Political Science or its equivalent
with at least 50% marks in the Honours papers. Selection wIll be
made on the basis of marks in the Honours papers.
For Sanskrit
Required qualifications: 3-year B. A. Honours degree or its equivalent
in Sanskrit; or 3-year Honours degree in any other subject other
than Sanskrit with Sanskrit as a subject at the H.S. level; or 3-year
B.A. Pass degree plus a pass in Tirtha or the Sanskrit Bridge Course.
N.B.: For all subjects, candidates who have passed the Correspondence
Course, Distance Education Course etc of a recognized university
will have to pass a qualifying test to be considered for admission.
Other Information for admission to the
Master of Arts (Day Course):
1.Candidates who have appeared in the B.A. / B.Sc. Final Examination
after securing Honours in the earlier part or parts of the course
may also apply.
2.Admission under reserved categories
SC/ST & PD quota will be reserved as per rules.
For candidates under the SC/ST Quota: Scheduled Caste/Scheduled
Tribe
Certificates must be obtained from a competent authority in the
name of the
candidates themselves. Attested copies must be attached with the
application. If the candidate is selected, the original certificates
will have to be produced for verification at the time of interview
and admission.
For candidates under the Permanently Disabled Quota: Permanent
Disability Certificates must be obtained from a compenent authority,
viz. Civil Surgeon / District Chief Medical Officers of Health /
Superintendents of Government Hospitals, in the name of the candidates
themselves. Attested copies must be attached with the application.
If the candidate is selected, the original certificates will have
to be produced for verification at the time of interview and admission.
3. The lists of applicants called for written test, Honours-)evel
examination and interview 0 (as applicable) for Bengali, Comparative
Literature, Film Studies and English, and for al interview for Economics,
History, International Relations, Philosophy and Sanskrit, as well
as the exact dates and times of the tests, examinations and interview,
will be put C up on the notice board. No separate admit cards or
call letters will be issued to 1. individual candidates. Candidates
are to report to the Head of the Department concerned directly on
the notified dates at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
4. Any candidate who does not satisfy the criteria for eligibility
will be rejected even if hel she appears in the written test, Honours-level
examination and/or interview.
5. Candidates are advised to carry the following documents at the
time of written test, Honours-level examination and interview: Original
mark sheets of all the Examinations passed, 2. including that of
the final Honours examination or any parts thereof, along with photocopies
of ,each (if not submitted along with the application); SC/ST and
PD Certificates if any.
6. Lists of provisionally selected and waitlisted candidates, as
well as instructions for the admission process, will be posted on
the notice board. No separate intimation will be sent to candidates.
7. Candidates
selected on the basis of results of a part of their Honours examination
will be admitted provisionally subject to their securing Honours
in the Final Examination. The mark sheet of the Final Examination
must be submitted within one month from the date of publication
of results, failing which their provisional admission will be automatically
cancelled and their names struck off the rolls of the University.
8. Candidates are required to bring the following at the time of
admission:
a) 5 copies of a recent passport size photograph
b) all original mark sheets and certificates
c) the admit card or certificate of Madhyamik or equivalent examination
(for age verification)
d) a fee book obtainable from the University Information Office
e) discontinuity certificate, where applicable.
f) character certificate from the head of the institution last attended
9. Candidates from other universities will have to submit a Migration
Certificate from the University last attended positively within
4 (four) months from the date of admission to this University, failing
which his/her provisional admission is liable to be cancelled.
