B.A. Honours- Eligibility and Procedure for Selection

Courses of three years' duration leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Bengali, Comparative Literature, Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science (in the Department of International Relations) and Sanskrit. The University does not offer any Undergraduate Pass Course .

There are either 18 Honours courses and 6 extra departmental courses of 50 marks each or 20 Honours courses and 4 extra departmental courses of
50 marks each for the BA Honours course.

One course of 50 marks divided as follows:

10 marks for continuous evaluation during the semester
10 marks for mid semester test
30 marks for end semester examination

ExplanationContinuous internal assessment shall be on the basis of tutorials, term papers, reports, seminar presentations, class tests or any combination of these, evenly distributed over the entire period of study.

Conditions of Eligibility (in terms of the aggregate marks secured in the Higher Secondary or equivalent examination).

i) For Comparative Literature: at least 55% (45% for PD and 41.25% for SC/ST reserved category) in aggregate with 50% (40% for PD and 37.5% for SC/ST reserved category) marks in Bengali and English each.

ii) For Philosophy: at least 50% (40% for PD and 37.5% for SC/ST reserved category candidates) in aggregate.

iii) For Sanskrit: at least 50% (40% for PD and 37.5% for SC/ST reserved category candidates) in aggregate with Sanskrit as a subject in the HS/Madhyamik or equivalent examination. Candidates who have not studied Sanskrit in HS or Madhyamik examination but have passed the Government recognized Madhya examination are also eligible.

iv) For Bengali, and English: at least 60% (50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category candidates) in aggregate.

v) For History and Political Science: at least 55% (45% for PD and 41.25% for SC/ST reserved category candidates) in aggregate.

vi) For Economics: at least 60% (50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category candidates) (with mathematics as a subject) in aggregate.

vii) At least 45% in H.S. or equivalent examination is required for candidates under the Sports category.

Selection Procedure

For Economics: On the basis of the aggregate marks obtained in the Higher Secondary/ Equivalent Examination.

For Philosophy, Sanskrit & History: On the basis of the aggregate marks obtained in the Higher Secondary/equivalent examination after working out the equivalence of marks between the W.B.C.H.S.E. and other Boards/Councils.

For English and Comparative Literature: On the basis of a two hour written test.

For Political Science: On the basis of equal weightage to (a) Higher Secondary/equivalent examination after working out the equivalence of marks between the W.B.C.H.S.E. and other Boards/Councils and (b) a one hour written test.

For Bengali:
Category – I (Candidates who have passed the examination of the W.B.C.H.S.E.): On the basis of 50% weightage to the aggregate marks and 50% weightage to the marks secured in Bengali.
Category – II (For candidates other than those who have passed the examination conducted by the W.B.C.H.S.E.): On the basis of a two hour written test.
