Publications
One of the most cherished and constitutive projects of the School, it was inspired by the Anweshi Project on women’s writings and partly out of a galling sense of socially induced amnesia with which the many-splendoured perceptions and insights and often creative innovativeness of these writers were gobbled up, leaving only faint traces. This has been a prolific series. Many of the older writers had not had formal schooling worth mention, but the level of understanding of what in current terminology would pass as ‘gender and development’ is often mind boggling. Professor Subir Roychowdhury (1934-93) became the first editor. Early participation from scholars like Susie Tharu, Himani Banerjee, Kumkum Sangari, Navaneeta Dev Sen, Begum Jahan Ara and others encouraged the process. Started in 1991, the series is running successfully till date.
