SCHOOL OF OCEANOGRAPHIC STUDIES

Brief Profile of the School

The School of Oceanographic Studies, Jadavpur University was set up in 1988 by the University Grants Commission with the objective of manpower training and multidisciplinary research on ocean sciences and technology. The efforts of the School were further supported by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and the Department of Ocean Development in 1991, creating a centre for "Coastal Ocean Design and Prediction System" (CODAPS). This was in recognition of the multidisciplinary expertise available at the University from the staff of various departments.

The School has already undertaken important programmes in teaching, research and manpower training. It was selected in 1999 as the lead centre in India for a collaborative programme with the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, under the DFID programme, for setting up a centre for "Integrated Coastal Zone Management Training".

Outline of the admin1istrative/academic structure

The School is governed by an Academic/admin1istrative Committee as per University guidelines. It is chaired by the Vice Chancellor, and includes all teachers of the School. The following external experts act as Advisors:
