FACULTY OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY---Production

This department, established in 1980, is comparatively young but has already been able to earn national and international reputation for itself especially during the late 80s. Since then there has been rapid advance in manufacturing technology, with computer controlled process and management information systems that effectively enhance a specialized training in manufacturing and production that cater to the growing requirements of industries both in India and abroad.

Project Outcome in National Context / Result Utilisation in Industry

 • The Science and Engineering Research Council of Department of Science & technology (DST), Govt. of India has instituted SERC School of Advanced Manufacturing Technology for imparting advanced training to engineering teachers and engineers in industry in the Department of Production Engineering and it is one of the five schools set up in the country by DST.

 • The Robotics/ CAD /CAM / FMS facilities have been utilized in training post- graduate scholars and undergraduate final years students in shaping their career in the emerging technologies. The facilities in the emerging areas of Manufacturing have been utilized for carrying out doctoral level research for advancement of knowledge.

 • A number of joint industry sponsonred research programmes in the emerging area of Manufacturing Technology have been completed successfully by the faculty.

 • The faculty members have been inducted in many national and international committees and they have served as Professors, visiting and Adjunct Professors in some of the leading Universities and research institutes in USA, UK, and Soviet Russia in Collaborative research.

 • The hardware and software facilities built in the laboratories in the area of Advanced Manufacturing Technology have served as model set –up for other engineering Institutes and Colleges in the region.

Origination of Schools/Centres

School on advanced Manufacturing Technology :- The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi has an ongoing thrust Area research program in Advanced manufacturing Technology (ATM) under its scheme of science and Engineering Research Council (SERC). In order to create awareness, interest and motivation in young engineers, to take up purposeful R&D in the challenging area of competitive manufacturing and to generate the necessary specialised manpower, it is proposed to conduct five schools on Amt. Each school has a special focus on the selected topics. The School of AMT of Production Engineering. Department, Jadavpur University is one of the schools focussing on -

 • New Materials and their Processing
 • Sensors for Automation
 • Advanced Manufacturing Processes
 • Integrated Manufacturing ( CNC/FMS/CIM)
 • Tooling
 • Inspection and Assembly
 • Robotics and Robot Applications
 • Maintenance Engineering
