ADULT
CONTINUING EDUCATION AND EXTENSION DEPARTMENT
The Adult Continuing Education and
Extension Department has recently been granted the status of an
academic department and placed under the Faculty of Engineering and
Technology. This is intended as an interim measure until a separate
Faculty for Interdisciplinary Studies is formed.
The Adult Continuing Education and Extension
Department was established in 1983 in order to extend the academic
facilities and expertise of Jadavpur University to the educationally
underprivileged sections of society, as delineated in the UGC
guidelines of 1982. After the Eighth Plan was over, the Centre
reoriented its activities according to the priorities set in the new
guideline.
The activities cover four major
areas:
• Continuing
Education • Post-Literacy
Continuing Education and Extension • Field Outreach • Research
Considering the overall
achievement of the Centre in all fields of Adult Continuing
Education, in 1997 the UGC placed it in Phase III, the highest phase
of development in this field. It has been designated the 'Nodal
Agency' for ten university ACEEE departments and centres in West
Bengal and the North-Eastern states. In 1999, it receivd the
prestigious UNESCO-NLM award for its outstanding contribution in the
field of adult education, adult literacy and continuing
education
