CENTRE
FOR REFUGEE STUDIES
Aims and purposes of the Centre
The Centre for Refugee Studies aims to influence public policy on
vital issues related to human displacement. It has therefore endeavoured
to involve various strata of society, including media, government
departments and NGOs, in its programmes and activities. It is attempting
to develop teaching modules and its programmes are interdisciplinary,
covering the entire field of the social sciences.
Brief history of the Centre
The Centre for Refugee Studies was set up in 1997 to carry on research,
initiate academic programmes, and influence public policy on issues
related to forced migration, rehabilitation and repatriation. It
is the pioneer in this field of study in the country. It is also
one of the very few in this area at the international level, and
is in constant interaction and collaboration with other institutions
and organizations carrying on such activities, such as the UNHCR,
the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the US Committee
for Refugees. Since the Centre has no permanent staff of its own
as yet, it is run from the Department of International Relations.
Projects, field training, internship and seminars are available
to students of the University under the auspices of the Centre.
Outline of the admin1istrative/academic structure
The Centre has an admin1istrative Committee with 10 members and an
Academic Committee with 16 members (30 per cent from outside the
University).
The day-to-day running of the Centre is in the hands of the Co-Ordinator.

Any other highlights
Apart from initiating and undertaking projects, the Centre has
proposed a Documentation Centre which would help to create an archive
of necessary materials for study and research. It has collaborated
with external agencies, national and international, to draw attention
to the problems of displaced peoples and undertake measures for
their rehabilitation. Special importance is given to the involvement
and training of NGOs in this work.
