CENTRE FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES
Profile of the Centre
The Centre for European Studies was set up in 1997 and is housed
in the Department of History, Jadavpur University. It is not a European
History Centre but rather a European Studies Centre which integrates
all social science streams working on European issues. The Centre
is a research and resource centre addressing all levels from undergraduate
students to admin1istrators and lay persons as well as scholars interested
in Europe. Unlike other Centres for European Studies across the
world, its slant is not merely towards hardcore social sciences
such as Political Science and Economics, but also towards media
studies, philosophy, literature and history.
During the last three years, the Centre has organized a number
of discussions and lectures as well as two international symposia,
one on " Exploring the Early Modern State in Europe" in
2000 and one on "The World Beyond the Nation State: Globalisation,
Identity, Memory" in March 2001. Its inaugural lecture was
given by Prof. Dietmar Rothermund of South Asia Institut, Heidelberg,
and its Millenium Lecture by Prof. Jean Marie Lafont of the Centre
des Sciences Humaines, French Ministry of External Affairs, based
in New Delhi.
The Centre was gifted a number of books by the French Embassy in
Delhi. The Centre des Sciences Humaines also sends it publications
here, and other newsletters such as Deutschland and the bulletin
of the International Institute of Macau arrive regularly as well.
The Centre maintains regular contact with Centres of European Studies
in Washington, Rome, Luxemburg and Macau. It is in touch with agencies
such DAAD and the European Union, and with scholars of European
studies in Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg and Rome. Once its
teaching programme gets under way, the Centre hopes to have a German
academician from Leipzig as associate for a month in 2002.
Outline of the admin1istrative/academic structure
