The department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University. was established.
in 1964. The renowned Prof. Gopinath Bhattacharya had been the first
Head of the Department of Philosophy and under his guidance, the
best scholars of the country were recruited as the faculty members
of the department. As a result, from the very beginning this department
has flourished.
The department has introduced an innovative syllabus, with equal
emphasis on the Indian and Western branches of Philosophy. Such
a syllabus along with the adoption of new methods of teaching, marked
a wide departure from the practices of other universities.

Potentiality of Industrial Collaboration
The resources of the department can be utilized for human resource
development. Philosophies of Science, Technology, and Management
Sciences can also be developed through fruitful co-operation between
the department and industry.

Resource Generation
The department is involved in human resource training and extension
activities but on a non-remunerative capacity. The department has
generated for the university an amount of Rs. 60,000.00 as royalty
from publications in the last five years.
The University Grants Commission has awarded a programme in the
innovative inter-disciplinary area of Cognitive Science jointly
with the Centre for Knowledge-based Systems, the School of Education
Technology and the Department of Philosophy as the nodal body.

National / Nodal Character of the Department
The department has been working as an All India Centre since 1977
and is sharing all the responsibilities within the ambit of CAS
stipulations. The members of the Faculty have frequently been invited
to act as Resources Persons in Seminars, Symposia, Conferences and
Refresher Courses both within the country and abroad. The number
of teachers who have participated in International Conference is
7 and in National Level Conferences is16 - during the current phase.
Five teachers have visited foreign Universities to participate as
Resource Persons.
