Relations
The department of International Relations was established in 1956
and is the only one of its kind in eastern India. The department
of International Relations is located at the main campus of the
Jadavpur University and is housed in the ground, first and fourth
floors of the PG Arts building. The department imparts knowledge
on the varied aspects of national and international politics giving
primary emphasis on contemporary issues relating to political, strategic
and economic matters. There are at present 19 faculty members. Faculty
members of the department are engaged in teaching at the Undergraduate,Postgraduate
and M.Phil. levels, as well as in research in different aspects
of international relations. At present, five options are offered
on Area Studies which are included as special papers in the Postgraduate
course. The department promotes research in such areas as internal
and external security concerns of India and South Asia, bilateral
relations, foreign policy, problems of ethnicity, society and the
role of military in South Asia, human rights, environmental issues
and the concept of gender in international relations. The department
also has a Centre for Refugee Studies.
B.A. and M.A. degrees are offered in Political Science and International
Relations respectively. The department offers three optional language
courses at the Postgraduate level. The M.Phil. degree is also offered
in International Relations. The intake of students in the department
at the Under-graduate, Post-graduate and M.Phil. level is 135, 130
and 30 respectively. The students are admitted to the Undergraduate
and Postgraduate courses on merit only. There is an admission test
for the M.Phil. course.
The departmental library has a collection of about 4,000 books
on relevant issues and is a regular subscriber of nearly 56 journals
of national and international repute. The department also has a
newspaper clipping section (Tarak Nath Das Research Centre), the
only one of its kind in Eastern India with nearly 2,5000 files dealing
with specialised topics of national and international importance.

Admission Procedure
B. A. in Political Science
Eligibility (in terms of the aggregate marks secured in the Higher
Secondary or equivalent examination)
At least 60% marks (50% for PD and 45% for SC/ST reserved category
candidates; 55% minimum for the sports category).
Candidates other than those who have passed the West Bengal Council
of Higher Secondary Education's examination will have to enclose
photo copies of evidence from the Board/ Council concerned indicating
the minimum number of subjects required for passing in the H.S./
equivalent examination.
An admission test will be held by the Department to determine final
admission to the B.A. course. Calculations for admission will be
made on the basis of 50% weightage for marks secured at the H.S.
or equivalent examination and 50% weightage for the marks secured
in the admission test.
Admission forms will be available immediately after the publication
of the W.B.C.H.S.E. results. The admission procedure will begin
thereafter.
M.A. Course in International Relations
Eligibility 3-year B.A. Honours degree or its equivalent in Political
Science with at least 50% marks at the Honours level. (Relaxation
as per rules for SC/ST candidates).
Candidates who have secured Honours marks in Part I or Part I and
Part II examinations of a 3-year Honours course in Political Science
and have appeared or will appear in the B.A. Final Honours examination
not later than July 4, 2003, may also apply.
Admission forms will be available in 2003 till May 26. The last
date for submission of applications is June 5.
M.Phil. Course in International Relations
Eligibility A minimum of 50% marks in the M.A. or equivalent examination
(47% marks for PD candidates and permanent full-time teachers with
a minimum of 5 years experience in Government recognized colleges;
relaxation as per rules for SC/ST candidates).
Subject Eligibility: Candidates with M.A. degrees in International
Relations, Political Science, Economics, History (with at least
one paper on either Political Theory or International Relations/
Sociology) may apply.
Admission is subject to a Departmental admission test.
Admission forms will be available in 2003 till May 26. The last
date for submission of applications is June 5.
International Relations
Eligible candidates may apply for a Ph.D. degree in International
Relations. Faculty members may act as guides or co-guides for doctoral
dissertations. The duration of the programme is five years, extendable
by another two years (1+1).

Specialization (Subject)
Offered
Special papers offered as part of the M.A. course include South
Asia, South-East Asia, West Asia, Central Asia, Asia Pacific and
North America, West Europe and Russia. Three European languages:
French, German and Russian are taught as part of the M.A. course.
The UGC has accorded DSA status to the department in 1986-87, which
has recently been renewed for a second term.
