National Seminar on Reading Indian Cinema: Contemporary Perspectives on November, 1998.

International Seminar on Satyajit Ray and the Legacy of Realism, organized by the Department in March, 2000

International Symposium on ‘Encountering Theory: The Experience of the Indian Academia’ was organised in September 2003. Prof. Laura Mulvey, Birkbeck College, London, delivered the keynote address.

An International Conference titled ‘Television in India: Issues in History, Theory and Culture’ was held in December, 2004.

A National Seminar titled ‘Currents in Popular Cinema: Liberalisation and after’ was held in November, 2005.

A National Seminar titled ‘Sound Cultures in Indian Cinema’ will be held on November 7 and 8, 2006.

The Friday Seminar series in the Department regularly organizes lectures by visitors and local scholars and screenings of short-films.

 Some of the recent ‘Friday Seminars’alks by Prof. Michael Taussig (Columbia University), Javed Akhtar (eminent poet-lyricist-scriptwriter), Dr. Sangita Datta (Birkbeck College, London). Anya Alo Anya Andhar a film by Shankar Karmakar on the life and times of Binoy Majumdar, Poet.

Additional Information

The Department has organized two widely attended Refresher Courses: Film, Mass Culture and Globalsiation in the Indian Context’ (2001), and Cinema and the Emerging Codes of Popular Culture' (2002). A UGC sponsored short course under the Retraining of College Teachers Program, entitled "Reading Cinema: An Introduction, was also held between January 3 and 6, 2006.
