1998-1999

1. An International Seminar on The Black Experience in American Literature, Art and Culture, was organized by the Jadavpur University Society for American Studies on 21-22 December, 1998. The Seminar Director was Dr Indrani Haldar.
2. A DSA International Seminar on The Many Worlds of Twentieth Century Literature was held on 8-10 March 1999. This Seminar too emphasized the work being done in the new Thrust Area of Twentieth Century Studies. The Seminar Director was Dr Sobha Chattopadhyay.
3. A DSA National Seminar on Aspects of the Renaissance was held on 7-9 January 1999. The joint Seminar Directors were Professor Sukanta Chaudhuri and Dr Amlan Das Gupta.
4. A National Seminar on 1798: A Celebration was held on 18 December 1998 with Sm Malabika Sarkar as Convenor.
5. A National Students' Seminar on Image, Music, Text was held on 29 November 1998. The Seminar was organized by Dr Santanu Biswas.
6. JUSAS organised six colloquia in addition to its International Seminar in December 1998. The Nineteenth Century Study Group met regularly and invited Dr Rimi B Chatterjee, formerly of the University of Oxford, to speak on the politics of publishing in colonial times with reference to the Oxford University Press.

1999-2000

1. A DSA National Seminar on Translation: Theory, Practice, Analysis was held on 17-19 February 2000. The Seminar Director was Dr Ananda Lal.
2. A DSA National Seminar on Literature and Philosophy was held on 22-24 March 2000. The Seminar Director was Professor Supriya Chaudhuri.
3. A National Hemingway Centennial Seminar was organized by the Jadavpur University Society for American Studies on 9-10 December 1999. The Seminar Director was Dr Indrani Haldar.
4. A National Seminar on Curriculum Development was organized by the Department on 29-30 July 1999. The Seminar Director was Sm Chandreyi Niyogi.
5. A National Inter-University Students' Seminar on T S Eliot was organized by the Department on 20 January 2000. The Seminar Director was Dr Indrani Haldar.
6. JUSAS held 8 colloquia during the year in addition to the Hemingway Centennial Seminar. One colloquium was in the form of a Seminar on Mark Twain. The Society publishes the JUSAS Newsletter to carry abstracts, bibliographies and occasionally full papers as presented at the discussions.

2000-2001

1. A DSA International Seminar on Words and Worlds in the Renaissance was held on 19 and 20 February 2001. The Seminar Director was Professor Supriya Chaudhuri.
2. A UGC-supported International Seminar, Re-thinking Romanticism, was held on 8 and 9 February 2001. The Director of the Seminar was Professor Malabika Sarkar.
3. A JUSAS International Seminar on Culture or Cultures: Unity and Diversity in American Literature and Culture, was held on December 12-13, 2000 at the Arts Faculty Seminar Room, Jadavpur University.
4. A DSA National Seminar on crime fiction, Murder in the English Department, was held on 26 and 27 March 2001. The Convenor of the Seminar Committee was Dr Nilanjana Gupta.
5. An Intra-departmental Workshop on MA teaching, Curriculum Revision and Course Design, was held in November 2000, under the direction of Dr Indira Chowdhury.
6. The Jadavpur University Society for American Studies has maintained its usual round of activities, organizing monthly paper-reading/ lecture/ panel discussion sessions on a varied range of subjects. The impact on American literature of social history, religion, the fine arts, music and film has been examined in different sessions.

2001-2002

1. A UGC-assisted DSA International Seminar, Towards Book History in India, was held on February 8-9 2002, organized by the Department of English in association with the Seagull Foundation for the Arts. The Seminar Director was Dr Abhijit Gupta.
2. The JUSAS Annual International Seminar, on American Fiction: A House with Many Windows, was held on 11-12 January in the Faculty Seminar Room.
3. A DSA National Seminar on Re-Locating the Victorians, in the Thrust Area of Nineteenth Century Studies, was held from 4-6 March 2002 in collaboration with the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata. The Seminar Director was Professor Sajni Mukherji.
4. A UGC-assisted DSA National Seminar on the occasion of the birth centenary of Jacques Lacan, Freud's French Revolution: Psychoanalysis, Literature and Culture, was held on December 11-12, 2001. The seminar Director was Dr Santanu Biswas. The seminar was partly funded from the University's Unassigned Grant, and partly from the DSA Seminar Grant.
5. An All-West Bengal Inter-University Students' Seminar on The Child in Literature was held on 22-23 March 2002, in which undergraduate and postgraduate students from Jadavpur University, Kalyani University, Rabindra Bharati University, University of Calcutta and Visva-Bharati read papers on the general theme. The fourteen papers read at the seminar were selected out of a total entry of twenty-two abstracts by the Faculty advisors to the seminar committee, Dr Abhijit Gupta, Dr Nilanjana Gupta and Dr Chandreyee Niyogi.
6. Other seminars held in the Department during this period include a one-day seminar in January 2002, held at the K P Basu Memorial Auditorium and organized in collaboration with the British Council and 'Sidewinder', an art event being held at CIMA Gallery on Colonial/ Postcolonial History and Art.
7. Another one-day seminar on Sharatchandra's The Final Question was held on International Women's Day, March 8, 2002, in association with the School of Women's Studies. Students also took part in other seminar activities, such as the First Year Undergraduate Seminar on 'The Vocabulary of Romanticism' which was attended by seniors as well.
8. As in previous years, the Jadavpur University Society for American Studies (JUSAS), maintained a busy round of activity, leading up to its annual International Seminar in January. After Dr Indrani Haldar's retirement, Professor Sobha Chattopadhyay has taken over as Co-Ordinator of JUSAS, with Dr Indrani Haldar as Chairperson.

A DSA International Seminar on W(h)ither English? The Future of English studies was held on March 20 and 21, 2003. The seminar was directed by Dr. Chandreyee Niyogi and Dr Nilanjana Gupta.
