Professor Swapan Chakravorty
Professor Swapan K. Chakravorty MA (JU) D Phil (Oxon.) joined the
Department in 1985 and was Head from 2005 to 2007. At present, he is
Deputy Co-ordinator of the CAS programme, and leads the Departmental
research project under the ASIHSS programme. He teaches Renaissance
European literature, early modern drama, Shakespeare, textual
criticism, book history and literary theory. Professor Chakravorty
is author of
Society and Politics in the Plays of Thomas Middleton
(Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996), and is contributing editor of
The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton
(Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2007) and
Thomas Middleton and Early Modern Textual Culture
(Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2007). He has co-edited
Print Areas: Book History in India
(Delhi: Permanent Black, 2004), and
Movable Type: Book History in India II
((Delhi: Permanent Black, 2008). His works in Bengali include the
book
Bangalir ingreji sahityacharcha
(Kolkata: Anustup, 2006) and the edited volume
Mudraner sanskriti o bangla boi
(Kolkata: Ababhas, 2007). Professor Chakravorty has also taught at
the University of Calcutta and Universiti Malaya, and delivered the
Strode Renaissance Lectures at the University of Alabama in 2003. He
is also Joint Director, School of Cultural Texts and Records.
