Academic contribution in last five years

Shri Rafat Ali’s areas of specialization are medieval and renaissance travel writing, and Islam and medieval Europe. He is at present working on a Ph.D. at Jadavpur titled ‘The Perception of the Islamic Other in Medieval and Renaissance Travel Writing, with Special Reference to Mandeville’s Travels’. He was an organiser of the national conference on ‘Indian Writing in English’ at Kalimpong College, Darjeeling, on 27-29 April 2005. He participated in a panel discussion on ‘Europe and its transition to modernity’ as part of the Refresher Course on ‘Europe and its Transformation to Modernity’ organised by the department of history, Jadavpur University, in October 2005. He was also on the panel of the discussion on reservation as part of the Retraining Programme on ‘Ethics in Education’, School of Women’s Studies, Jadavpur University, January 2005. He was a National Service Scheme (NSS) Programme Officer for the university and joint coordinator for the MA Evening Courses, Dept of English for the sessions 2005-2006.  He participated in a workshop on ‘Uses of Free and Open Source Software’ organized by the School of Media and Communication and Culture, and the Media Lab,  Jadavpur University in collaboration with Institute for Open Technology and Applications, West Bengal on 9 August 2008.
