Faculty of Arts - English

The establishment of the department in the year 1955 was primarily aimed at providing language and humanities teaching to students of technology. But rapidly it has developed into a full-fledged prestigious department for the study of English as literature and associated European languages, the interaction of European and Indian literature and culture and cultural studies. At the time of granting DSA status the report of the visiting UGC team described it as one of the best English Departments of the country.

The achievements and potentiality of the department was formally recognized when it became the first English Department in the country to be granted SAP Programme by the UGC. The department has specialist teachers in all major areas and periods of English Literature. Several of them are experts in various other European languages and literatures, many areas of Indian literature and culture, and other subjects of arts, in relation to literature.
