Meaning of Architecture and Architect

Architecture is a very old profession practiced long back in all civilized countries including India. In India many treatises on architecture were discovered which clearly prove the existence of this profession, practiced by “Sthapati” (architect), for at least two thousand years. Many old edifices in India also carry proof for this.

In modern days architecture is considered as one of the important professions requiring both creative and rational abilities. Practice of this profession, like few other professions, is controlled by acts in many countries. In India we have “the Architects Act, 1972”.

“Architecture means the art and science of building design and particularly the design of any structure for human use or habitation. Architecture, further, is the art of applying human values and aesthetic principles to the science and technology of building methods, materials and engineering systems, required to comprise a total building project with a coherent and comprehensive unity of structure and site.”1

“Architect means an individual who through education, training, and experience is skilled in the art and science of building design”1.  An architect is “one who possesses with due regard to aesthetic as well as practical considerations, adequate skill and knowledge to enable him (i) to originate, (ii) to design and plan, (iii) to arrange for and supervise the erection of such buildings or other works calling for skill in design and planning as he might, in the course of his business, reasonably be asked to carry out in respect of which he offers his services as a specialist.”2 A suitable statutory authority of a country must of course, register an architect.  In India architect means a person whose name is for the time being entered in the resister of architects maintained by the Council of Architecture.3

Architects normally design buildings like residential, assembly, business, education, health, factory, industrial, mercantile, storage, utility etc. He can diversify his specialization to become an urban designer, urban planner, building project manager, building financial advisor, landscape architect, interior designer, etc.  The normal duties of an architect employed in a building project cover a range of tasks: surveying the site, producing drawings to express the design, advising on building regulations, selecting materials, supervising the works, issuing certificates, etc. “The Architect needs to possess sufficient knowledge about all aspects of modern building technology, to be able to design for various functions under different contexts and to direct and coordinate the work of all the specialists involved in the building process.”4

It is obvious from the above that a country requires good architects for its development. India also depends upon architects for its development. Architects’ ability, sincerity, hard work and love for the nation will be an impetus for fast forward development of our country.
