Academic Structure

The University has 34 departments grouped under three Faculties :

Faculty of Arts : 12 departments
Faculty of Engineering and Technology : 17 departments
Faculty of Science : 6 departments.

In addition, there are 16 interdisciplinary schools and 21 Centres of Research, bodies distinctive to the structure of Jadavpur University :

The list of courses is as follows :

53 diploma courses
14 certificate courses
39 undergraduate courses
6 postgraduate diploma courses
49 postgraduate degree courses
12 M.Phil. courses
Ph.D. programme in all three Faculties
30 extension and miscellaneous courses.

2 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate degree courses, and various diploma and certificate courses, are run on a self-financing basis. This excluded courses at the four affiliated institutions.

The University has a notable record in introducing new courses in emerging areas of knowledge. In the last 5 years, the number of new full-fledged degree courses alone comes to 16, including 4 in the Faculty of Arts. More new course are about to introduced, or are under active planning. This excludes the very large number of new options, combination, course components etc. in virtually all disciplines. The account of the Faculty of Arts notes some of the most significant components in the Arts curricula. It should also be noted that to ensure indisciplinary work and studies in emerging areas, new courses are conducted not only by the traditional departments but by some of the Interdisciplinary Schools of study.

Computer application has been made compulsory for every graduate in Engineering & Technology, Science and some departments of the Arts faculty.
Classical modular tagging of courses with defined objectives, operational modality and application relevance in respective fields.

Trans-disciplinary approach in course design.

Infrastructure consolidation to accommodate subjects in emerging areas.
Distance learning through country wide class room programme of UGC.
Use of teaching aids like OHP/LCD projectors, slide projectors, multimedia packages, CAL, CAI etc.
